Biography

Attorney Corey Mehlos, owner Casper Mehlos Law Group, LLC, in Madison, graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame and University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School. He leads the firm's criminal defense practice and collaborates with Attorney Tim Casper handling large recovery civil litigation cases. Attorney Mehlos and Casper combine for over a half century of trial experience and have tried over 400 cases, generally complex criminal and civil cases, in state and federal jurisdictions across the country. Attorney Mehlos' background in the Wisconsin Innocence Project allowed him to collaborate with some of the world's leading DNA experts while handling over a dozen homicide and serious felony cases. There he collaborated with a team of attorneys and investigators to secure the release an Innocent Project client 26 years prior to his scheduled release date due to their successful investigation strategy. Attorney Mehlos excels at handling complex criminal and civil cases. He takes a "team approach" to cases by partnering with his clients as well as leading experts nationally and internationally to develop cutting-edge defenses tailored to maximize the likelihood of each clients' success. Attorney Mehlos' tailored investigation and defense strategies have consistently resulted in successful outcomes, demonstrating his clients' innocence following an extremely thorough investigations and/or the presentation of expert testimony, in a number of serious felony cases. Attorney Mehlos has secured not guilty verdicts at trial in cases by presenting compelling evidence of his clients' innocence, including a double homicide case alleging two counts of First-Degree and Second Degree Intentional Homicide, a 59 count Felony Theft case in which his client was facing up to 365 years in prison if convicted, a 1st Degree Sexual Assault Case alleging his client sexually assaulted three alleged victims, two felony "false confession" cases, among a number of other cases. Attorney Mehlos has also secured dismissal of serious cases prior to trial, including two Felony Murder charges in a double homicide case, a 1st Degree Reckless Homicide charge in a Len bias case, three First Reckless Endangerment of Safety charges in a drive-by shooting case, Repeated Acts of Sexual Assault of the same child in case the client experienced a hung jury with different counsel, an interstate cytptocurrency Money Laundering case investigated by the United States Secret Service and a number of other complex criminal cases. Attorney Mehlos has collaborated with Attorney Casper to help his clients secure substantial recoveries, including a million dollar recovery. Attorney Mehlos serves on the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Attorney's Executive Board, speaks to lawyers at state and national conferences on topics involving legal strategy and law firm leadership, and hosts a podcast, "Invictus" discussing cutting-edge criminal defense issues to advocate for those wrongfully accused of serious crimes. He has been recognized by the National Registry of Exonerations in 2023 after securing a complete acquittal of his client (who had been previously convicted of four serious crimes with another attorney at trial based on a "false confession"), making his client one of 3,000 Americans who have been wrongfully convicted of a crime they did not commit only to be subsequently demonstrated to be innocent. Attorney Mehlos is extremely passionate about advocating for each of his clients and invests a significant amount of time reviewing professional literature and consulting with leading experts to develop new and cutting-edge defenses in the areas of forensic psychology including DNA transfer theory, toxicology, neurology, reconstructive memory, ballistics, the use of deadly force, self-defense, and  behavioral and mental health factors associated with false allegations.
