Biography

John Hilgeman is a general practice attorney whose work focuses on civil litigation, business law, estate planning, probate, and family law. He has been practicing law in the Dayton area for more than four decades and is a founding partner of Cowan & Hilgeman. John grew up in Centerville, Ohio, and graduated from Kettering Archbishop Alter High School in 1975. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Cincinnati in 1979 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1982. He has been a member of the Dayton and Ohio State Bar Associations since 1983. Before entering private practice, John held various positions with Lexis/Nexis from 1981 to 1989, including management responsibilities in Product Development, Database Operations, and Corporate Planning. He began practicing law with Dayton attorney Jack E. Staley from 1989 to 1991, then worked at Altick and Corwin from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, John and his partner, Christopher F. Cowan, formed Cowan & Hilgeman and purchased a downtown Dayton office building where the firm remains today. John is licensed to practice in the State of Ohio, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He has been active in the legal community throughout his career. John taught the Dayton Bar Association New Lawyer Training Collection Seminar for several years and has also taught business law and real estate law classes for the American Institute of Paralegal Studies and the Ohio Real Estate Institute. He has been invited to appear on The Dayton Bar Association Lecture Series, both in-person and on television, to discuss small business formation and probate matters.
