Biography
Attorney Joseph A. Scrofano is a passionate trial lawyer who will aggressively fight for your rights in a DC criminal case. Mr. Scrofano has litigated more than 1,000 cases in the District of Columbia courts and administrative agencies. He routinely practices in the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia, the District of Columbia Superior Court, and has argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.Referred to affectionately by his colleagues as “Scruff Justice,” he has a reputation as a forceful advocate who fights harder than other more conventional criminal defense lawyers.

He is dedicated to his clients and continuously strives to sharpen his trial skills. Indicative of this drive, he has attended some of the nation’s top advocacy institutes. For example, in 2013, Mr. Scrofano graduated from the Trial Lawyer’s College, a selective trial advocacy college founded by legendary trial lawyer Gerry Spence. At the Trial Lawyer’s College, he spent three intensive weeks living on the Thunderhead Ranch in Wyoming with top criminal defense and plaintiff lawyers from across the country. At the Trial Lawyer’s College, he learned the importance of telling his client’s story and how to connect with and convince juries to give clients justice. He returned to the Trial Lawyer’s College in 2014 and 2017 to complete week-long advanced training programs. He remains active in the organization helping lawyers across the country prepare for trials in civil, criminal, and military justice cases.
Mr. Scrofano has been selected as a Rising Star by Super Lawyer’s Magazine—a prestigious, patented attorney rating service through Thomson Reuters from 2015 to 2022 and selected as a Super Lawyer from 2023 to the present. He has achieved the highest peer review rating with Martindale Hubbell as “AV-Preeminent”–scoring a perfect score of 5.0/5.0.
As a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association, he is on the cutting edge of challenging DC DUI’s with aggressive tactics, smart instincts, and sound judgment. In addition, Mr. Scrofano obtained certification through the National Highway & Traffic Safety Administration to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests–the same training officers receive to make DUI arrests in 2016.
