Biography

Monica Cameron was raised in Norwich, Kansas, as the oldest of six children. She decided during high school that she wanted to be a prosecuting attorney. Her goal was to protect the public by putting serious criminals in jail. As a teenager and young adult, Monica worked with children as a nanny and childcare provider. In 2005, Monica graduated Magna Cum Laude from Washburn University with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Legal Studies. Monica’s earned a full-tuition scholarship to Washburn University School of Law. While in law school, Monica was elected Student Bar Association Secretary, Kansas Bar Association Representative, and International Law Society Faculty Liaison. She was also a member of the Family Law Society. Based on her superior legal writing and research skills, she was selected to mentor other law students as the Legal Analysis, Research and Writing Teacher’s Assistant. From 2002 through 2006, Monica worked as a legal assistant at the family law firm of Martha Ortiz, in Topeka, Kansas. Monica learned about the dynamics of domestic violence through her employment at a battered women’s shelter. She later prosecuted domestic violence cases an intern at the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.
