He is known not only for the scope and complexity of the cases he takes on, but for his ability to secure justice for individuals and families during the most tragic moments of their lives. He has represented clients throughout Florida, across the United States, and around the world, providing strategic, aggressive representation in large and tragic injury cases. A fourth-generation Floridian and Palm Beach County native, William comes from one of America's founding families, with deep roots in both Florida and New England history. His ancestors played a role in shaping early America — including Rev. Elisha Williams, former President of Yale University; Colonel Ephraim Williams, founder of Williams College; and William Williams, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His family helped settle and defend the western frontier of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and contributed to the cultural, political, business, and military fabric of the young nation. His maternal grandfather, Norwegian industrialist Karl Ragnar Fagerberg, helped develop Norway's water and energy infrastructure, and his mother served in the Norwegian resistance during the Nazi occupation of World War II — a story William later chronicled in his book, Terror Before Dawn: A Child at War. In South Florida, William's great-grandfather, Henry J. Sterling, was one of the earliest settlers of southern Palm Beach County after acquiring land from Henry Flagler. The Sterling and Williams families helped found what would become the city of Delray Beach and contributed to the development of Bethesda Memorial Hospital, donated public playgrounds, and supported other civic infrastructure. In recognition of these contributions, the family was honored by the Historical Society of Palm Beach County.
